How to convert your CD files into MP3 files.

Do you want to know how to convert your cds into mp3 files? It is not as hard as it would seem to make an mp3. If you have the right software it is relatively painless to create mp3 files.

Get The Software to make Mp3 Files

To make an mp3 from a cd, you will need what's called a "ripper". a ripper is a program that "rips" cda files from your cd and converts them into mp3 files. I use Musicmatch Jukebox to make my mp3 files. You can download it free from their site. There are other rippers, but I like this one the best and I wrote these instructions for this program. If you use another ripper the concepts described below for making cd files into mp3 files are the same, but the specifics might be slighly different.

What Bitrate Will You Use?

Bitrate is the average number of bits is in one second of audio data. The higher the bitrate the better the quality of your mp3 files. For near CD quality use 96 kbps. This will give you pretty good quality and smaller mp3 file sizes. If you want CD quality, use 128 kbps or 160 kbps. This will give you better quality, but at a larger mp3 file size. I think 96 kbps is more than sufficient and allows me to hold more mp3 files on my computer.

To change the bitrate settings in Musicmatch:
  1. Click on "Options".
  2. Mouse over "Recorder"
  3. Select "Settings"
  4. Choose the appropriate bitrate.
  5. Click "OK"
Start Ripping
  1. Open Musicmatch.
  2. Insert a CD into your Cd-ROM
  3. Connect to the internet, if not already connected. This will allow the recorder to search the online CDDB (CD Database) and collect the album information. Otherwise you will need to do this manually.
  4. After the CDDB returns the information or you have entered it, hit the record button.
  5. Depending on the speed of your PC, it should only take about 10 minutes to rip the entire cd.
