Creating An Online Shopping Site

Thinking about starting an online shopping site? According to the U.S. Department of Commerce, over $300 billion in online shopping will be conducted during the first decade of this millennium. The Internet is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. It is no wonder that many traditional businesses are also conducting business online. Online shopping is becoming a common method of shopping. However, it isn't a simple matter of slapping some products on a web site. There are many other considerations to create a successful online business. Here are some pointers for starting an online shopping business and making a better online shopping site

Purpose

Why do you need an online shopping business? Is it because everyone else has one? Maybe you think it is a great way to get rich quick. These reasons aren't good enough for starting an online shopping site. The fact that everyone else is doing it, only means there will be more competition. You won't get rich quick. Just like anything else in life, you will have to work for it. It is going to take awhile. If neither of these are reasons why you want to start an online business: then ask yourself, "What do I want to deliver? What can I offer that my competitors don't? Why can't customers get it from a traditional business?"

Goals

What do you want this site to do? Is it only an ad for a business? Is it going to sell products or services? Is it going to be a customer service tool for already existing customers? Maybe it will do all of these things. If so, rank these goals. Have a clear idea of what this site is going to accomplish. My suggestion is not to have it just be an ad a business. Phonebooks do the same thing cheaper and more effectively. Online shopping is a way to increase business. The internet is popular because of interactivity. Phonebooks can't do that. Online shopping is one way to get that interactivity while making money directly. Not many advertising mediums can do that.

Finding a Designer

Find a web designer that can design/redesign, register domains, get a host, list sites, and maintain them. A skilled web designer should be able to do all of these things. There are web design directories that can help finding a good web designer. Have a budget in mind before contacting a web designer. Simply asking how much it will cost will not be very fruitful. Different web designers charge different prices. Prices are often varied from site to site. Instead, find out what a designer can do with the budget you have, and select the best designer that offers the most services. Be sure to check if they have experience creating online shopping carts. A great place to begin searching is Craig's List. You can post your information and have designer's contact you.

Usability

Online shopping must be handy. Unlike traditional businesses, it is easier to go to a competitor than it is to deal with a hard to use site. Competition is a few clicks away. A site must save customers time when shopping there. Quickly show what your company is about, what you have to offer, and how they can get it. Shopping must also be intuitive. A customer's online shopping experience shouldn't include spending time figuring out how to shop. The design should allow a customer to instinctively know how it works. Visit successful online shopping companies like Amazon and competition. What do they do that is successful? Shop at these sites yourself. Take notes on what features made for a better online shopping experience.

Target Your Audience

Your site may be on the World Wide Web, but this doesn't mean the whole wide world is your audience. The majority of people online aren't interested in your product or services. You don'tt need to cater to them. Your target are people interested in your site. You don't need a few million random people to visit your site. You only need a few hundred or a few thousand interested people to make a site successful. Success of an online shopping site depends on conversions. You want a high percentage of people that come to your site to actually buy something. One way to do this is by targeting people that actually want to buy your product.

Build a Database

Ask visitors shopping at your site to answer a few questions. Make sure it is fun and fast. Don't have them fill out a 100-question survey. Reward them for their time; offer them a discount or free shipping. Just make sure it is worth their time. Above all, don't force them to fill out a survey. Ask them once.If they say no, leave them alone. Remember they are there for online shopping, not to take a quiz.

Promoting

Using the database you built, you should know your viewers enough to promote your online shopping site more efficiently. Search Engines are a great way to start out, but they target the whole wide world, and remember, that is not your audience. Promote your site on other sites that can get you your target audience.

One rule of traditional business that holds true in for online shopping, is repeat business is important. People who have bought something on online once are more likely to buy something again vs. people who have never bought anything online. This is called inner-store marketing. The best form of advertising for online shopping is by having excellent customer service. If a customer has a great experience they are likely to come back and buy something else. They will also tell others about it. It is about building trust. Check out the Better Business Bureau's tips for online shopping. Keep these tips in mind when designing a site, customers will feel secure in their purchase.

To keep customers coming back; have them opt-in to receive a newsletter from your company. When doing that just remember a few things. Don't spam, you are certain to lose business. Have something useful to say. Customers don't want an e-mail saying "Hi". Tell them about new features, products, promotions, gift ideas, contests, and coupons. Also, be sure to make it easy for customers to opt-out.
Another great way to retain customers is to create a sense of community. Create a bulletin board or chat room where customers can get their questions answered and a place for them to express their opinions. Be sure to listen to what they have to say.

Maintenance

Maintenance is just as important as the initial set up of an online shopping site. Listen to customer's opinions. If they don't like how something works on the site, fix it. Update the site to meet their needs. Having a stagnant site, no matter how well designed, is never an option. It shows you don't put much effort into the site. The same will be assumed of your service and products. Constantly look for new ideas or features to add. Be careful though; be sure to have a good reason for these additions. Don'tt overwhelm customers with features that they won't use. This will help make their shopping experience enjoyable.
Be Patient

As I said earlier, you won't get rich quick. Success doesn't happen over night. Build a good foundation and sales will eventually climb. Work put in now will pay off later. If you follow these guidelines your site will be successful and your customers will enjoy their online shopping experience
